The Depot

Croydon CR0 5NE
by Alan Gutsell

He looks around eagerly as the coach begins to slow down. What is going to happen in this strange building where all the coaches live? The boy's body swings to the right as the coach turns into the open and noisy space. A large monster of metal, gleaming and dirty, holds him in awe for moment while the coach floats past it. The coach walls stop shaking. Everything goes still. "Stay still. Don't open the door!" His father leaves the coach. Forgotten until now, his brother leans around the seat and points with a grin at the roof. One of the windows on the top of the coach has been left open. There is a bang and a roar. A giant maw yawns. Seeing the coach, it starts forward and swallows the front with cloth teeth spinning as they furiously wash away the dirt of the week. The whole window is rippling with water and bubbles, which are swallowed by the machine. This whirlwind takes over his window by inches, and then it passes by leaving a lather of soapy spittle. He looks around in surprise as it begins to rain on him. Realising it is coming through the window in the roof, he laughs and hides from the water as the maw whooshes by. With a bang and a whine his father puts the beast to sleep and lets his sons out. Excitement forgotten as he sees the monster! Stubby legs run to this giant. The massive frame, the cab, the crane, the dangling hook and towering exhausts of this behemoth designed to rescue other monsters of the road. The boy cannot understand this towering creature. Feet planted, eyes wide, with all ten fingers gripping his curly hair, he stares in disbelief.
